Description
The Yorktown Victory Monument commemorates the American and French victory at the Battle of Yorktown, Virginia. The battle ended on October 19, 1781. This was the last major battle of the American Revolution. Five days after the battle Congress received word of the victory. On October 29th Congress decreed that a marble column be built at the site to commemorate the victory. However, it wasn't until October 18, 1881, 100 years after the event, the corner stone was ceremonially laid. At the top of the column is a statue of Lady Liberty.
