Description
The Yellowstone Grand Canyon varies from 800 to 1200 feet in depth and from 1500 to 4000 feet in width. Hot spring activity has continued through the ages altering the lava rock and producing the variety of colors present. The color is due largely to varied iron compounds in this area. Steam vents and geysers are still at work on the canyon walls. Some of these are visible on the left wall of this image. The Yellowstone River rushes along continuing its enduring task of deepening the canyon. At the upper middle of the image the Lower Yellowstone Falls can be seen.
