Description
This bridge called the Jay Jay Bridge was constructed in 1963 and spans the Indian River just North of Titusville. This bridge is part of the railroad system linking the Florida mainland to Merrit Island for shuttling heavy machinery, equipment and supplies to and from the John F Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Items that have crossed here include spent solid rocket boosters, rocket frames and other space program materials, which are normally shipped via rail, and therefore cross this bridge. A drawbridge, not shown in this image, allows ships and sailboats to pass through. The bridge is a great spot for shrimping and fishing for Seatrout, Redfish, Red Drum, Snook, Black Drum, Sheepshead and Blue Crabs.
The Indian River is part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Per Wikipedia The Intracoastal Waterway is a 3,000-mile (4,800 km) inland waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States, running from Boston, Massachusetts, southward along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the southern tip of Florida, then following the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, Texas. Some sections of the waterway consist of natural inlets, saltwater rivers, bays, and sounds, while others are artificial canals. It provides a navigable route along its length without many of the hazards of travel on the open sea.
