Description
This is the famous Devils Tower immortalized in the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." It is located in Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming. The park is the first site designated as a national monument. The name Devil's Tower originated in 1875 during an expedition led by Colonel Richard Irving Dodge, when his interpreter reportedly misinterpreted a native name to mean "Bad God's Tower."
Per Wikipedia, Native American names for the monolith include: Bear's House, Bear's Lodge, Bear's Tipi, Home of the Bear, Bear's Lair, Aloft on a Rock, Tree Rock, Great Gray Horn, Brown Buffalo Horn and Grizzly Bear Lodge. Many of the names stem from several Indian legends that tell that the vertical grooves in the monolith were caused by giant grizzly bears attempting to climb to the top to attack children who had hidden there.
