Description
This is a section of the towpath in the Canal Lands Park of the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area near Zoar, Ohio. The Ohio and Erie Canal was constructed in the 1820s and early 1830s and carried freight traffic from 1827 to 1861 when the arrival of railroads killed the market. Mules once pulled canal boats laden with passengers and goods up and down this historic route. Eventually the canal length totaled 308 miles stretching from northeast to central and south central Ohio.
