Description
This view from atop Cadillac Mountain on Mt Desert Island, Maine, is looking out over Frenchman's Bay and the Schoodic Peninsula. Cadillac Mountain is located in Acadia National Park and at 1,530 feet, is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard. The mountain was once higher but due to the ebb and flow of glaciers the peak has been ground down leaving the scarred, rocky top that exists today. In fact the presence of several mountains with barren rocky tops in the area led the early Spaniards to name the island Mt Desert Island.
During most of Winter and Spring Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the United States to view the sunrise. At other times of the year the first sunrise viewing spot shifts to northern Maine due to the tilt in the Earth's axis.
