Description
This is the iconic Devils Tower located at the Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming. Per the National Park Service website, [Devils Tower is] "...an astounding geologic feature that protrudes out of the rolling prairie surrounding the Black Hills." This site is considered Sacred to the Lakota and other tribes that have a connection to the area. Hundreds of parallel cracks make it one of the finest traditional crack climbing areas in North America. Devils Tower entices us to explore and define our place in the natural and cultural world.Devils Tower did not visibly protrude out of the landscape until the overlying sedimentary rocks eroded away. As the elements wore down the softer sandstones and shales, the more resistant igneous rock making up the tower survived the erosional forces. As a result, the gray columns of Devils Tower began to appear as an isolated mass above the landscape.
As rain and snow continue to erode the sedimentary rocks surrounding the Tower's base, more of Devils Tower will be exposed.

Great view and capture, John. I do remember a movie ... where I was "a emotional part of it, and in the landscape". I am glad for you! F/L

I am always fascinated by rock formations. This famous spot is marvelous. I prefer the Native American name for this craggy butte, an interesting story. Great composition and perspective, especially with those glorious clouds. Beautiful, John. LF Janet 💕
