Description
There is a true feeling of majesty and awe staring up at the four presidents portrayed at Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The imposing faces of presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln makes one feel small, yet fortunate to have had such leaders. The presidential portraits are carved out of the granite filled Black Hills of South Dakota. The master sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who was the leader of the Mount Rushmore project, tragically died before the project was completed. The last sculpture scheduled to be completed was of Abraham Lincoln. After the death of Borglum the project was discontinued and Abraham Lincoln was never finished. Original plans to include the torso of at least President Washington also did not occur. The area below George Washington can be seen to be unfinished. Finally, Mr. Borglum intended to remove all the sculpting debris from the base of Rushmore to further beautify the monument. That task was also cancelled.
