Description
This was taken in the Florida Keys and shows the orginal seven mile bridge and the current highway bridge that connects Marathon Key to Big Pine Key. The older bridge is on the right and is known as the Old Seven Mile Bridge. It was originally built as a railroad bridge, part of the Overseas Railway that began at the southern Florida mainland and ended at Key West. The railroad was in operation from 1912 to 1935. After the railroad was damaged by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, the line was sold to the United States government, which refurbished Seven Mile Bridge for automobile use. The bridge guardrails are actually the old railroad rails repurposed from the old bridge. The current road bridge was constructed from 1978 to 1982. Pigeon Key is in the background. A 1.2 mile section of the old bridge is maintained as a bike and pedestrian way connecting Marathon to Pigeon Key. It also serves as a unique tourist attraction. The remainder of the original seven mile bridge is closed and steadily deteriorating.
